BLACK SABBATH - "God Is Dead?"

Now here is some NEW(!) music from the originators of the super-heavy riff: BLACK SABBATH. Bands like ALICE IN CHAINS certainly owe everything to this band and listening to sinister and creepy tone of the opening riff, these guys STILL HAVE IT ZOMG!!

I liked what I heard so far and I'm excited to wait for their new album.

ALICE IN CHAINS - "Stone"

The modern masters of the super-heavy riff, I've always loved the sound of ALICE IN CHAINS and their recent stuff has been awesome (I thought Black Gives Way To Blue was pretty good).  I really can sink my teeth into the riff here.

DAFT PUNK - "Get Lucky"

Of course I had to post this up!

In an interview with DAFT PUNK said that everyone these days is doing electronica to death with no real innovation so they wanted to go in a different direction. Good thing they know how to make an awesome pop song with regular instruments.

Although it is catchy, I'm not sure it would have made my Top Ten: DAFT PUNK Songs but it's still a good song.

TNGHT - "Acrylics"

TNGHT is back to bring some heavy bass to warm up your day. Enjoy.

A$AP ROCKY - "1 Train"

Oh yes, the obligatory posse joint. A$AP ROCKY does a good job here in bringing forward a lot of hip hop's new stars here and they all sound great together. I like how you can hear the inspiration behind these "new" rappers like how YELAWOLF sounds like EMINEM, ACTION BRONSON like GHOSTFACE KILLAH, and BIG K.R.I.T. like BIG BOI (I'm by no means that one sounds better than the other, just that they sound similar).

I'm glad KENDRICK LAMAR got to redeem himself with the sick second verse after his lackluster performance in A$AP's club joint "F**kin' Problems."

NAILS - "In Exodus"

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take 17 minutes to listen to this ten song EP!. Starting from the opening track "In Exodus," this devastating album will assault your ear drums in the best way possible.

I attached the whole EP above so now you have no excuses.

THE JUAN MACLEAN - "You Are My Destiny"

What a fun house track! Puts you in such a good mood.

TYLER, THE CREATOR - "Bimmer"

Found on the back of TYLER, THE CREATOR's latest music video, "Domo 23," this short song compares his girl to his BMW car. It's better than you think it would be.

The beat for this song is sweet with FRANK OCEAN padding it with his vocals but unfortunately for us, this song ends just before the one minute mark.

So why is this video placed above the awesome lyrical rap gymnastics that is "Whoa" by EARL SWEATSHIRT?  Well, I like the lovely lady featured here over that aged ballerina.

EARL SWEATSHIRT - "Whoa"

EARL SWEATSHIRT is a prime member of the OFWGKTA, a.k.a. ODD FUTURE, and here he helps show the world why they're a rap crew to behold.

Above this simple but infectious beat, EARL just lays on line after dense line of  metaphors and word play. Don't worry, there's no shame in turning to Rap Genius to fully understand all the things he says.

Put this song on repeat.

SOUND CITY PLAYERS - "Mantra (Live Recording)"

It's just so fascinating to see good musicians just have fun in the studio. In this video, we are treated to the Kings of Alternative Rock work together to make something new.

DJ RASHAD - "Let It Go"

The beats here go so hard and fast that it's hard to even keep it. An intense song to get you going.

DRAKE - "5 AM In Toronto"

DRAKE reps his hometown (and mine!) with this great heavy cut. DRAKE does well on this hard beat keeping his rhymes fresh and his flow fresh.

BIG BLACK DELTA - "Side Of The Road"

BIG BLACK DELTA is the solo work of MELLOWDRONE vocalist Jonathan Bates. Here he created a very new wave, electronica sound with that distorted keyboard bass move up and down below his heavily distorted voice.

NELLY - "Hey Porsche"

NELLY is back and he wants everyone to know that he's still rich! Hoo ray! Seriously, NELLY's signature sing-rap style works very well with the dance beats that are so popular with urban music these days. Watch out FLO RIDA!

This song is a poorly-veiled metaphor comparing his Porsche with a woman but hey, it's still fun and sounds much better than his first draft of "Hey Toyota."

AUTRE NE VEUT - "Play By Play"

Now this is the song I've had on repeat for a while now; I just can't get sick of it. Brooklyn's own AUTRE NE VEUT brings us an R&B song under the guise of a electronica/shoegaze sound. The singing is passionate and supported with interesting "studio tricks" (like at 2:34) that keeps the song going with refreshing new twists. Most of the song is just a big build up to the song's peak at around 2:50 where the "chorus" (if we can call it that) starts, a repeated phrase sung almost like a gospel track. This song is just so satisfying.

AUTRE NE VEUT just released his new album Anxiety last week and it is full of interesting, neo-soul songs like the single "Counting" that should please fans of many musical genres.

ATOMS FOR PEACE - "Ingenue"

ATOMS FOR PEACE is a rock supergroup consisting of alternative rock royalty Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich of RADIOHEAD, Flea of RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, Joey Waronker of BECK & R.E.M., and Brazilian instrumentalist Mauro Refosco. The band bonded together over their love of Afrobeat and together they have created the album Amok.

Just like how he did in the RADIOHEAD music video "Lotus Flower" Thom Yorke displays his dancing prowess again in this video for "Ingenue" which is still just as fixating. Like really, I have no idea how the song sounds like, just his dancing.

SOAP&SKIN - "Sugarbread"

Austrian experimental band SOAP&SKIN has released some weird things and this lovely song is an intense, horror movie in a single.

Reminds me of "Full Of Fire" by THE KNIFE but even less musical...

DAVID BOWIE - "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)"

Like I mentioned in my last post about BOWIE, the man from Mars is back on the music scene releasing singles for his upcoming twenty-fourth studio album The Next Day. Here is his second single which is a little more upbeat than his last new outing (and I like upbeat).

YEAH YEAH YEAHS - "Sacrilege"

YEAH YEAH YEAHS are back with this punchy song as their lead single for the upcoming album Mosquito which comes around April 16th.  A fun song but this band certainly has some big shoes to fill with Maps being one of my favourite songs of all time and the runner up for my top song of 2003.

PHOENIX - "Entertainment"

PHOENIX is back with this punchy song as their lead single for the upcoming album Bankrupt! which comes around April 23rd.  A fun song but this band certainly has some big shoes to fill with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix being one of my favourite alternative albums of all time, and 1901 my top song for 2009.
